Call this week's game the Frankie Valli match because the Browns as the classic Frankie Valli song My Eyes Adored You goes are "So Close and Yet so Far" from being a winning team. I adore this Browns rookie class, they look great, we are getting closer but here come the Ravens to remind us just how far we are from being great.
You cannot help but be awed by the Browns defensive performance against Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and the powerful Bengals Offense last week. The Browns to use the words of John Harbaugh, completely smothered Burrow and his teammates. Adding Mason Graham and Carson Schwesinger together with a greatly improved Greg Newsome to the already amazing combo of Denzel Ward and Myles Garrett has resulted in a defense that did what I thought would be impossible. On a great weather day, they surrendered 7 measly yards the entire second half to the legit Super Bowl contenders from Cincinnati.
Awesome is the only word.
The problem Sunday is Lamar Jackson.
John Harbaugh is not going to take any chances with the Browns Sunday and I think that means running Lamar a lot. A few successful naked boots to Garrett's side early for big gains would effectively slow Garrett down by keeping him thinking and I think Lamar will pull that off. I think Carson Schwesinger is going to be a first year Pro Bowler, he's that good, but Sunday will also be a baptism for him. As he worries about Lamar running, it's easy to imagine Mark Andrews finding space in the middle of the field.
I expect Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews to have big days and I think the Ravens D will put enough pressure on Joe Flacco to ruin a play or two.
