Brown BLog Predicts: Week 7 vs Dolphins

The second time Dillon Gabriel played Ohio State last season was on January 1 in the Rose Bowl.  In that game Dillon Gabriel had respectable stats going 29-41 for 299 yards, 2 TD's and no interceptions.  But a deeper look is more troubling.   Gabriel was completely shut down by Ohio State's defense until after Ohio State was up 34-0 right before halftime.   Once Ohio State got up by 34 points they went into clock management mode and gave Gabriel a bit of room to breath.

That Buckeye defense had 8 members drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.   It was a great defense.   My worry is that as bad as the Miami Dolphins are, they are an NFL defense.  The book is already out on Dillon Gabriel.   Put him under pressure and dare him to throw the ball more than 20 yards downfield.  Even with his brilliant computer like mind, his good manners and excellent interviewing skills, all of which impressed Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski and convinced them to draft Gabriel in the 3rd round, Gabriel lacks one small detail, he does not have an NFL arm.   Lacking an NFL arm is a problem even for Quarterbacks who stand taller than 6'.

That's a problem.

The weather may be bad tomorrow which could mean all bets are off but even with bad weather, I cannot see a path for the Browns to walk out of their home stadium with a W against Miami.

That said, I do believe Quinshon Judkins will break a long TD or two and the Browns D may well put up some points.   Look for a closer game than normal and a rare moral victory with the Browns scoring 20 points.   Moral victories aside, a loss is a loss and I think the losing will continue on Sunday in the Dawg Pound.

BROWNS CRISIS MODE: Opinion - What I Would Do If I Were Jimmy Haslam

I watched the Netflix documentary The Gambler and his Cowboys about Jerry Jones and came away with a different reaction than the one I imagined:  a newfound respect for Jones.   I knew Jones played College Football but I didn't realize he was a starting offensive lineman on a National Championship Team.

Jones has a sound foundation as a football expert.  Furthermore, he grew up in a middle class family which gives him humility.   Jones has often been bold, but I learned watching that documentary that at many points in his life, Jerry Jones faced decisions that would ruin him financially had things gone wrong.   Jones oozes self confidence however the fact that he grew up by humble means gives him sufficient humility to assess risks.

What does this have to do with Jimmy Haslam?   Everything.   I think Jimmy Haslam sees himself in Jerry Jones and that self image is the source of everything that has gone wrong with the Cleveland Browns during the Haslam era.

First, Jimmy Haslam is not a football expert.   Jerry Jones is.  Ok, Jerry Jones is crazy, but he is an expert.  Case in point?  I can give you one good one.   Jerry Jones passed on Johnny Football....

Second and most important, Haslam falls below the threshold of accurate self assessment.  It was Richard Feynman who once stated "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool"

Haslam spent his entire business career in a large corporation created and owned by his father.   Unlike Jerry Jones, Haslam does not know what it feels like to know that one bad decision could lead to ruin.  When you have the structure of Multinational Corporation behind you, it's hard to fail.  I know, I ran an operation for a multinational corporation for 7 years in Italy.  I had smaller more nimble competitors, who were led by people that had more technical depth than I did.  But what they lacked that I possessed was the support of a big bank, world class law firms, tax consultants and accounting firms.  I was smart enough to know that my success those 7 years was attributable to the organization I had supporting me and my team and that my very able competitors were handcuffed in many ways. I leveraged those advantages every chance I had.

When I look at the Browns during the Haslam era, it feels like he never learned he's not infallible.  In the world of multinationals competing with smaller competitors, it's hard to lose.  In the NFL everyone has the same resources.   The consequences of impulsive decisions are immediate and destructive.

So what would I do if I were Jimmy Haslam after the Dolphins game?

- I would immediately announce that Kevin Stefanski no longer reports to me.  I would have Stefanski report to Andrew Berry and I would announce that I will begin to search for a new leader to run football operations.   Once hired, Berry would report to this person and this new leader would be responsible to drive football operations.   I would wait until the end of the season but not any longer, to hire this person.

- I would offer Paul DePodesta a position as an outside consultant, but eliminate his role in the Cleveland Browns organization.

Why?

Because everything that has gone wrong with the Cleveland Browns during the Haslam era has Jimmy Haslam's fingerprints on it.   And whether it be feelings of guilt or regret, it clouds his ability to assess situations.

More importantly, even when Haslam is paralyzed by regret, he still cannot control his impulsiveness.  Yes for 6 years now Haslam has had the same head coach and general manager for if you look underneath the hood, impulsiveness still reigns:

- It had to be Haslam that drove the decision to fire AVP and replace him with Ken Dorsey - DISASTER

- It had to be Haslam to drive the decision to fire Mike Priefer and hire Bubba Ventrone - DISASTER

- $230,000,000 fully guaranteed?  Who else, Jimmy Haslam - DISASTER

Need I go on?

I'm not sure Kevin Stefanski is the answer.   But I am sure that Stefanski is a solid coach whose main defect is that his job security is too tightly connected to saying yes to every ignorant idea Paul DePodesta comes up with and I am also sure that Jimmy Haslam has no business running the football operations of an NFL team.

Solve the real problem first please.

Sad But True!

During the Steelers game on this sack of Dillon Gabriel, the Browns kept 8, yes EIGHT count them, offensive players in to protect Gabriel in an attempt to try to give Gabriel time to get a ball deep to one of the two receivers they sent downfield

The result?  Jalen Ramsey sacked Dillon Gabriel

Harold Fannin, who to be fair, has flashed potential all season long as a pass catcher, made a rookie mistake and completely missed Ramsey's blitz.

So the Browns kept 8 in to protect their QB, and the Steelers with 7 defenders attacking, got to Gabriel in about 2 seconds for a big sack.

Brown BLog Predicts: Week 6 vs Steelers

Anybody can win in the NFL and even for the Browns it is rare when I truly believe there is zero chance on a given Sunday that the Browns will win, but it happens.

It seems that on those rare occasions I think there is zero chance the Browns win and I put it in writing, the Browns actually win.

So with great trepidation, I am going to put this in writing:  There is absolutely zero chance the Browns beat the Steelers this Sunday.

Why:

- Rookie QB
- Mike Tomlin
- The Steelers are coming off a bye week
- The Browns are coming off international travel and jet lag last Sunday
- Browns team morale coming off a devastating loss and two surprising trades during the week.

The Brown BLog Predicts:

Steelers        27

QB Depth Chart

I just read Kevin Stefanski's answer to the question of whether or not Shedeur Sanders is going to be QB2 now that Joe Flacco has been traded.

His usual evasive answer today was:

"In my role, I have to do what's best for our players, our team. I'm very invested in our quarterbacks' development."

Typical Stefanski answer. Allow me to translate

"No, Sheduer Sanders will not be our 2nd String QB this week"

When Stefanski does in fact make it clear he is demoting Sanders, watch the worldwide press explode.  It's going to be a sight to watch!

Brown BLog Predicts: Week 5 vs Vikings

I cannot help but believe that one way or another, Dillon Gabriel is going to mark a turning point in the career of Kevin Stefanski and maybe Andrew Berry too.   First let me say, I understand perfectly well that Kevin Stefanski knows far more about football than I do.   He has probably forgotten more about football than i know.   But...  Jimmy Haslam?  Let's be honest, he's a fan just like most of us.  A fan who has a few billon dollars but he has proven over the course of his ownership that even if his aspiration is to be Jerry Jones, who I consider to be a football expert, albeit a crazy one, Jimmy Haslam is still more a fan than an expert.  His winning percentage in the NFL serves as evidence of this.

So what's the point?

Dillon Gabriel makes his NFL debut this Sunday against Minnesota. Dillon Gabriel is facing real headwinds. Less than 5% of all starting NFL QBs in modern history have been under 6 feet and fewer than 3% have had sustained success His success in the NFL will hinge on anticipation, accuracy, and handling pressure without the elite rushing threat that QB's like Russell Wilson or Kyler Murray possess.  My opinion is that it was Jimmy Haslam who mandated the Browns pick Shedeur Sanders and judging by the frowns in the room when Sanders was picked, i think there is a good chance I am correct.  Since one evening passed between the pick of Gabriel in the third round of day 2 of the 2025 Draft and the pick of Sanders on day 3, I can imagine Haslam's texts blowing up that evening before day 3 from his deep list of NFL VIPs and the tone of most of those comments being "what the fuck?!"

The bottom line is this:   Kevin Stefanski has had most of his NFL success with journeymen QBs like Case Keenan.   Stefanski was starting to have success with Top 10 QB Baker Mayfield but for whatever reason that relationship ruptured.   If Dillon Gabriel turns out to be just another journeyman, and the data says he will, I think the Browns will move on to a more traditional NFL Head Coach.

If Dillon Gabriel turns into Drew Brees, Kevin Stefanski will have a long reign as Head Coach of the Browns.

Time will tell.....

One week won't decide the future of Dillon Gabriel but I predict his career as an NFLstarter won't begin with a win.  That of course will not be his fault because it's never the QB's fault when a QB they like fails.

Look for Brian Flores D to outflank the Browns D and come up with a W in London on Sunday

Brown BLog Predicts: Week 4 - Browns vs Lions

There are a lot of storylines to this week's Browns game:

- The Lions timeline and philosophy to build a winner, compared to the Browns

- The story of Lions ownership compared to the Browns ownership

- The Lions coming off a big Monday night win but having one less day of rest

- Home field advantage for the Lions

- The Browns dominant defense

- The Browns rookies who are already flashing Pro Bowl potential

- The Browns offense inability to move the ball.

A focus on any one of the above can lead to different predictions on Sunday

I am going to look at ownership.  Since Sheila Ford took over the reigns as Principle Owner and Chairperson of the Lions she has led the team wisely, using support from people like Chris Spielman to guide her in the quality of persons she puts in change however she has avoided any involvement in football operations decision making, preferring to put full accountability into her operations staff.  Meanwhile the Browns owner Jimmy Haslam still directly manages both Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry and can't seem to resist influencing the biggest football decisions.

The results are self evident.

That said, the Browns are showing signs of life, and the win over Green Bay gives Browns fans hope that this season won't be another disaster.

I envision the Browns leaning into Quinshon Judkins, eating clock and I also envision the Browns defense making life hard on Detroit.   But not enough for the Browns to sneak out of Detroit with a win.

Brown BLog Predicts: Week 3 vs The Packers

The Packers do everything well.   Their QB Jordan Love is efficient and has the highest yards per pass completion in the NFL at 13.7 yards.  He doesn't turn the ball over and he's only been sacked twice.   In fact the Packers as a team have yet to turn over the football.  Zero, zilch.

The Packers Defense is stingy giving up only 13 points to the powerful Lions and holding the Commanders to 18.

The Packers Special teams are strong with Brandon McManus who is a reliable kicker and Daniel Whelan who leads the league in yards per punt.

The Browns have talent but lack cohesiveness and are too young to compete with a talented and disciplined veteran team.

It won't be close on Sunday as the Browns continue their Nightmare on Elm Street like journey through what promises to be a disastrous first 6 games on the 2025 season.

Culture

I enjoyed watching Baker & Nick Chubb tonight & I understand why the Browns got rid of them. They're winners and didn't fit the Browns losing culture

Brown BLog Predicts: Week 2 vs Ravens - So Close............... and yet so far

Call this week's game the Frankie Valli match because the Browns as the classic Frankie Valli song My Eyes Adored You goes are "So Close and Yet so Far" from being a winning team.  I adore this Browns rookie class, they look great, we are getting closer but here come the Ravens to remind us just how far we are from being great.

You cannot help but be awed by the Browns defensive performance against Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and the powerful Bengals Offense last week.   The Browns to use the words of John Harbaugh, completely smothered Burrow and his teammates.   Adding Mason Graham and Carson Schwesinger together with a greatly improved Greg Newsome to the already amazing combo of Denzel Ward and Myles Garrett has resulted in a defense that did what I thought would be impossible.   On a great weather day, they surrendered 7 measly yards the entire second half to the legit Super Bowl contenders from Cincinnati.

Awesome is the only word.

The problem Sunday is Lamar Jackson.

John Harbaugh is not going to take any chances with the Browns Sunday and I think that means running Lamar a lot.   A few successful naked boots to Garrett's side early for big gains would effectively slow Garrett down by keeping him thinking and I think Lamar will pull that off.   I think Carson Schwesinger is going to be a first year Pro Bowler, he's that good, but Sunday will also be a baptism for him.   As he worries about Lamar running, it's easy to imagine Mark Andrews finding space in the middle of the field.

I expect Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews to have big days and I think the Ravens D will put enough pressure on Joe Flacco to ruin a play or two.

Brown BLog Predicts: Week 1 vs Bengals

Brown BLog Predicts: AFC North 2025

The toughest division in the NFL promises to be exciting and competitive again in 2025.

Here are my predictions for each team:

First Place:  Baltimore Ravens  12-5

- The Ravens are the best coached and most talented team in the AFC North

- John Harbaugh has built a Growth Mindset.  Athletes that the Ravens select improve year to year at a greater rate than any other NFL team.

- Lamar Jackson is amazing, determined and it's only a matter of time before he has a Super Bowl ring

- The Ravens defensive backfield was a weakness in 2024.  This season the addition of Jaire Alexander and Malaki Starks transform that group.

- Mike Green will help an already strong defensive line.

Second Place:  Cincinnati Bengals 11-6

- The Bengals have Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins and Chase Brown.  30 points or more is a probability every time they step on the field

- Al Golden needs to get the Bengals defense to improve from terrible to mediocre.  A scheme that keeps things simple and Shermar Stewart flashing potential should help the Bengals keep their opponents under 24 points a game often enough to battle the Ravens for first all season long.

Third Place:  Pittsburgh Steelers  10-7

- The Steelers have Mike Tomlin

- The Steelers D will be as great as they always are

- Aaron Rodgers to DK Metcalf - all year long!

Last Place:  Cleveland Browns  5-12

- The NFL hung a miserable schedule on the Browns, as they continue to punish the Browns for $230,000,000 fully guaranteed.  With that tough start, the Browns are bound to play well and still start 0-6 or 1-5 and it'll be onto Dillon Gabriel, who won't be ready for prime time.

If You Build It, They Will Come

I’ve been a Browns fan long enough to carry the scars. I’ve stood in the freezing winds off Lake Erie, watched games through sleet that stung my face, and sat in the aftermath of seasons that ended not with a bang but with a blizzard. And now, with talk of a new dome stadium in Brook Park, I can’t help but think: maybe it’s finally time to take the weather out of the equation.

Here’s the truth. Playing in Cleveland in December and January isn’t football, it’s survival. The weather becomes the great equalizer, turning track stars into plodders, quarterbacks into handoff machines, and playbooks into checklists of whatever you can still run when your fingers are numb.

But imagine the Browns being the only team in the AFC North with a dome. Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Cincinnati will keep grinding it out in the cold while Cleveland plays in fast, clean conditions every single week. Our athletes could play at full throttle, our passing game wouldn’t sputter in the wind, and talent would decide the outcome.

I’ll never forget 1980. Brian Sipe was the MVP of the league and yet when it mattered most, the weather smothered him. That team should have soared, but the elements clipped their wings. Forty-plus years later, it still hurts to think about. A dome means that never happens again.

Now let me shift from the field to the stands. I’ve been lucky enough to attend games at AT&T Stadium in Dallas several times, and walking into that place is like stepping into the future of football. It’s warm when it’s freezing outside, cool when it’s blistering hot, and everywhere you look there’s something designed to make fans feel like they’re part of something bigger than a game.

You don’t go there to “endure” the game, you go there to enjoy it. That’s the difference.

Picture it: a December Sunday in Brook Park. Instead of bundling up in five layers and battling the wind, you walk into a climate-controlled palace. No frozen hot chocolates, no icy metal bleachers, no shivering while you watch the Browns’ season slip away. You just watch football and enjoy the environment.

And as a fan who’s lived through decades of heartbreak, that sounds like paradise.

Some people will say weather is part of Browns tradition. Maybe. But tradition shouldn’t mean handicapping yourself forever. A dome doesn’t erase Cleveland’s grit it enhances it. It gives us the stage to finally showcase the talent we’ve assembled without having the skies decide the score.

For the team, it’s a competitive advantage. For the fans, it’s comfort and spectacle. And for Northern Ohio, it’s a chance to finally give Browns football the setting it deserves.

If you build it, they will come. And this time, we might actually stay long enough to watch the confetti fall.
