I cannot help but believe that one way or another, Dillon Gabriel is going to mark a turning point in the career of Kevin Stefanski and maybe Andrew Berry too. First let me say, I understand perfectly well that Kevin Stefanski knows far more about football than I do. He has probably forgotten more about football than i know. But... Jimmy Haslam? Let's be honest, he's a fan just like most of us. A fan who has a few billon dollars but he has proven over the course of his ownership that even if his aspiration is to be Jerry Jones, who I consider to be a football expert, albeit a crazy one, Jimmy Haslam is still more a fan than an expert. His winning percentage in the NFL serves as evidence of this.
So what's the point?
Dillon Gabriel makes his NFL debut this Sunday against Minnesota. Dillon Gabriel is facing real headwinds. Less than 5% of all starting NFL QBs in modern history have been under 6 feet and fewer than 3% have had sustained success His success in the NFL will hinge on anticipation, accuracy, and handling pressure without the elite rushing threat that QB's like Russell Wilson or Kyler Murray possess. My opinion is that it was Jimmy Haslam who mandated the Browns pick Shedeur Sanders and judging by the frowns in the room when Sanders was picked, i think there is a good chance I am correct. Since one evening passed between the pick of Gabriel in the third round of day 2 of the 2025 Draft and the pick of Sanders on day 3, I can imagine Haslam's texts blowing up that evening before day 3 from his deep list of NFL VIPs and the tone of most of those comments being "what the fuck?!"
The bottom line is this: Kevin Stefanski has had most of his NFL success with journeymen QBs like Case Keenan. Stefanski was starting to have success with Top 10 QB Baker Mayfield but for whatever reason that relationship ruptured. If Dillon Gabriel turns out to be just another journeyman, and the data says he will, I think the Browns will move on to a more traditional NFL Head Coach.
If Dillon Gabriel turns into Drew Brees, Kevin Stefanski will have a long reign as Head Coach of the Browns.
Time will tell.....
One week won't decide the future of Dillon Gabriel but I predict his career as an NFLstarter won't begin with a win. That of course will not be his fault because it's never the QB's fault when a QB they like fails.
Look for Brian Flores D to outflank the Browns D and come up with a W in London on Sunday
